The International Olympic Committee (IOC) held its 101st session in Monaco and on Thursday 23 September 1993, voted to award the 27th Olympics to Sydney. When IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch made the formal declaration at 8.28 pm (Monte Carlo time) it was very early morning (4.28 am) on Friday 24 September in Sydney (Australia).
We have a range of items relating to the 2000 games. May we draw your special attention to items postmarked on 23 September 1993, the day of decision in Monaco. These were done in Australia in anticipation of a win by Sydney and were necessarily of small numbers. If Sydney lost, these items would have been of little value today, except to bid city collectors. History will record that Juan Antonio Samaranch said…and the winner is Sydney! |
